  • Ribbons are awarded based on placement within a heat, not an event

Who swims what:

In a Dual meet every swimmer does not get to swim every event. Below is the process the Krakens use to determine who swims what:

Each event is broken down by Age Group / Gender.

Individual Events:

  • Every swimmer will swim in both Free and Back
  • In IM, Breast and Fly we are limited in the # of swimmers that can swim for each gender/ age group combination by WHALe
    • We will review placements EVERY meet
    • In IM we are only allowed to swim 2 heats of swimmers. In an 8 lane pool that would mean 8 Kraken Swimmers for this event.  As a general rule, the top swimmers who can legally swim this event for each age group / gender are selected each meet.  However, the head coach has the final decision on who will swim.
    • In Breast and Fly each team can swim 3 heats of swimmers.  In an 8 lane pool that would mean 12 Kraken Swimmers will swim this event.
      • As a general rule, the top 6-8 swimmers who can legally swim this event are selected each meet.  However, the head coach has the final decision on who will swim.
        • Some swimmers will swim in multiple events because they made the top 6-8 swimmers in each stroke.
      • The remaining slots for each stroke will be rotated each meet to ensure that we maximize the number of swimmers participating. This gives everyone an opportunity to swim something other than just free or back at some point at least once.
      • Some of our age groups are rather large so if your swimmer is not swimming Breast or Fly in a particular meet we will do our best to have them swim one or the other in the next meet. We are tracking who swims what and will do our best to keep things balanced.

Relays – Freestyle and Medley

  • The Meet will start with the Freestyle relay and conclude with the Medley Relay
    • Each relay team is made up of 4 members
    • The maximum # of 4 person teams will be formed – sometimes we don’t have enough swimmers to complete a team so everyone may not make it onto BOTH sets of relays.
      • If you select that your swimmer can swim BOTH the Free and Medley Relay then your swimmer WILL swim at least one relay or the other.
      • If you select that your swimmer can only swim ONE specific relay then there is no guarantee that your swimmer will swim on a relay for that meet.
    • Medley Relay is the last event of the night. Please be sure your child is cleared by the Ready Bench parent before leaving the pool for the night. If your child is scheduled for a relay, please remember there are 3 other children counting on them to swim!  If your relay team is disqualified because your swimmer was not available to swim, your swimmer will not be eligible to swim in a relay for the next meet.
